Review
Colin Jackson kindly provides the review.
"Being invited to travel 40 miles to see a Pantomime in February in a South London church hall on a cold and wet Friday night may not seem an exciting prospect to you. However the Magdalene Players production of Jack and the Beanstalk was well worth the trip for its originality and the obvious enjoyment of the audience. Rarely can one find a traditional family pantomime, which this was, even if it was a bit too long. This original script was not only full of all the usual jokes to make you laugh or groan, but also complimented by excellent singing , particularly from the leading girls.
Jack and Faith, very well cast, kept the show going with his audience participation and the two baddies had an originality often missing in panto however their slapstick routine just did not work for me. The costumes throughout were excellent with good colour coordination, apart from the dames which were best viewed through dark glasses!!
The Dame herself/himself was bold, bright and brassy and long will I remember his striptease dance showing nothing more offensive than a very hairy (and fulsome) belly. The principals were very well supported by a full chorus and a hard working backstage crew who battled with very limited space and a large amount of set to ensure an enjoyable evening by a very competent group. I would be interested in seeing them in a challenging play as there was a great deal of potential on stage from a wide age group."
